Real answers for your healthcare questions

Who is eligible to contribute to an HSA?

Answer

You can generally contribute to an HSA for a month if you are covered by an HSA qualified high deductible health plan on the first day of that month and do not have disqualifying other health coverage. You also cannot be enrolled in Medicare or be someone else's tax dependent.

What to Know

Certain additional coverage, such as dental, vision, accident, or limited purpose arrangements, may be allowed. A general purpose health FSA or HRA can make you ineligible to contribute. Eligibility and contribution limits are determined under federal tax rules.

What to Do Next

Before contributing, confirm the plan is specifically HSA eligible and review any other coverage you or your spouse have. If you enroll in Medicare during the year, pay special attention to when HSA contributions must stop.
