Real answers for your healthcare questions
When should I enroll in Medicare?
Answer
For most people, the first Medicare enrollment window begins three months before the month they turn 65, includes their birthday month, and continues for three months after. The right time to enroll can be different if you are still working and have qualifying employer coverage.
What to Know
Signing up before your 65th birthday month can help coverage begin when you first become eligible. If you delay Part B because you have current employer coverage, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period later. COBRA and retiree coverage do not always protect you from late enrollment penalties in the same way active employer coverage can.
What to Do Next
A few months before turning 65, review your current insurance and employment situation. Confirm whether you need Part A, Part B, or both right away, especially if you or your spouse are still working or you contribute to an HSA.
