Real answers for your healthcare questions

What does Original Medicare not cover?

Answer

Original Medicare covers many medically necessary hospital and medical services, but it does not cover everything. Common gaps include most routine dental care, routine vision care, hearing aids, long term custodial care, and healthcare received outside the United States except in limited circumstances.

What to Know

Original Medicare also does not have an annual out of pocket maximum for Part A and Part B services. That is one reason some people consider Medigap or choose Medicare Advantage instead. Prescription drug coverage also generally requires Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drugs.

What to Do Next

Before relying on Original Medicare alone, review the services you expect to use and the costs you would be responsible for. Consider whether you need Part D, Medigap, or separate dental, vision, or other coverage.
