Real answers for your healthcare questions
What does in network and out of network mean?
Answer
In network providers have contracted with your health plan to provide covered services at negotiated rates. Out of network providers do not have that same contract with the plan.
What to Know
Using in network care usually costs less and gives you stronger protection from unexpected charges. Some plans, such as many HMOs and EPOs, may provide little or no routine out of network coverage. PPOs may cover out of network care but often at a higher cost.
What to Do Next
Check the plan's current provider directory and confirm directly with the provider before non emergency care. Do not assume that every doctor at an in network hospital is automatically in network for your plan.
